After a loss against Los Gatos High School on Jan. 19, Varsity Girls Basketball defeated Homestead High School 68-39 on Saturday, Jan. 20, bringing its league record to 5-1 and its overall season record to 13-3. The Matadors maintained a strong start, ending the first quarter with a 13-point lead and the next three quarters with a 12-point, 21-point and 29-point lead respectively.
Senior and captain Vivian Ong attributes their overwhelming victory to the team’s motivation to recover from their performance the night prior. Ong hopes that winning this game helped the team move on and return to its dominant state when the team had a six-game winning streak in its previous games during the season.
“Everyone got into play today, so that was really good,” Ong said. “It’s just helpful for everyone to improve and play with other people. We just tried to sub everyone in, make as little mistakes as possible and play a clean game.”
While MVHS kept a constant lead, HHS scored more points than MVHS in the second quarter. Ong finds that the quality and consistency of their gameplay can be improved through better communication and getting more rebounds. Ong explains that HHS’ players did not have a large height advantage, so MVHS should have scored more points than they did.
Junior and forward Konstanze Forst agrees but also expresses her contentment with the win, saying that being able to come out on top after working hard to prepare for this game to make up for their previous loss was satisfying.
“Today, we were really aggressive on defense and got some good fast breaks, which was good because we kept up our lead,” Forst said. “After yesterday, we were really keen to win and our hopes are to keep working hard on our defense and keep winning.”
