Varsity Boys Basketball defeated Ann Sobrato High School 60-44 during its fourth preseason game on Saturday, Dec. 30. MVHS maintained a strong lead, ending the first half 45-15. Though ASHS began to catch up, ending the third quarter 47-32, MVHS pulled through in the final quarter for the win.
“In the second half, we stopped playing together,” Suresh said. “They put pressure on us, so we got a little unfocused but we definitely got closer as a team.”
Junior and guard Stanley Du echoes Suresh’s comments about MVHS being unable to match the energy that ASHS had coming out of halftime.
“We weren’t aggressive and we weren’t getting to the line like we were in the first half,” Du said. “We lost the lead instead of keeping the lead. I think we have to improve when we get a lead. We can’t let it go because they can come back at any time.”
However, Du attributes the win in part to the energy of the team coming into the game. Du acknowledges that the players were all able to maintain this energy.
“All of our players came up with great energy coming off the bench,” Du said. “That’s huge for us because we can’t always have the starters playing the whole game. So those players coming out and bringing the same energy is really good for us.”
Suresh echoes Du’s sentiment about team dynamics throughout the game and focuses on the team being able to also have fun in future games. Suresh has high hopes for the team to maintain the same energy in league games and come out strong. Du also hopes for the team to continue to keep up the spirit in the league games.
“We’re focused on every game and just taking it one game at a time and then hopefully good things will happen,” Du said.
