Varsity Girls Water Polo fell 10-5 to Homestead High School on Tuesday, Oct. 10. HHS led in the first quarter 2-0 but MVHS gained momentum in the second quarter, ending the first half leading with the record at 4-2. However, MVHS fell behind in the third and fourth quarters, ending the game with a score of 10-5.
Sophomore and goalie Ria Sethi attributes the loss to lack of communication throughout the game, although the team maintained energy as the game went on.
“I think we were very spirited and motivated, but I feel like we could have communicated more in the pool rather than communicating between quarters, just calling for the ball, stuff like that,” Sethi said. “Also knowing where to go and listening to where your teammates are telling you to go [is important.]”
Senior and sprinter Courtney Yuen echoes Sethi’s thoughts on motivation, mentioning how she had high expectations for the game due to the high spirit in team dynamics.
“Today, we were able to move around in the pool very well because normally we feel like we’re stuck, but today we were very active,” Yuen said. “I expected a better result and I expected the game to be closer. And [throughout] the game [we were] one [point] behind or two [points] behind and we got better so we thought that we would be better.”
Sethi also mentions flaws in the defense as an aspect that could have room for improvement.
“I think the problem with our defense was that we could have went back much quicker,” Sethi said. “And I think because of that, our team was not able to communicate properly with who goes where.”
Overall, Sethi and Yuen believe that the team could work on utilizing everyone’s strengths to the fullest, mentioning the steps they believe the team must take to achieve improvement.
“I hope that we are able to communicate better,” Sethi said. “We need to really dedicate time towards certain places and also get used to different players more quickly.”
