Varsity Football secured a 22-10 win against Gunn High School on Friday, Sept. 22, bringing its season record to 2-2. The game started off slowly, as neither was able to score by the end of the first quarter, until GHS managed to push through MVHS’s defense, resulting in a 0-7 deficit at halftime.
MVHS took back the lead by scoring a touchdown and successfully executing a two-point attempt in the third quarter. Senior and defensive tackler Nathan Diaz attributes the comeback to better communication.
“As a whole, we were having lackluster communication at times in this first half,” Diaz said. “But then in the second half, we came as a whole and we regrouped. For me individually, sometimes I had mental lapses, but in the second half, I was more vocal and being more of a leader.”
MVHS maintained a strong defense throughout the rest of the second half, preventing GHS from meeting the endzone for the rest of the game. Nearing the end of the last quarter, MVHS added to its lead by scoring a touchdown and going for the two-point attempt once again. Sophomore and free-safety Graham Ischo commends the strengths the team showed throughout the game, emphasizing how its aggression and defense was a major factor in its victory.
“We just put them to work,” Ischo said. “It was a dog fight, but no matter how hard the hits we took were, we got back up and continued, [and] they weren’t ready for the intensity that we played with.”
