Before developing a passion for synchronized swimming at age seven, Ding was initially considering pursuing gymnastics. However, due to her parents’ safety concerns, she was put in a two-week synchronized swimming summer camp. After those two weeks, the coaches recommended that Ding join the club’s competitive team, which marked the beginning of her synchronized swimming journey.
