One of the aspects that Neuroscience Club president senior Nathan Wong likes most about the subject is its ability to directly impact a person. After all, what could be more relevant to a person than their mind? Over the month of January, Wong and other officers of the club have attempted to expose members to more events that involve neuroscience professionals.
Last weekend, the club participated in one of these events at the SFN (Society for Neuroscience) Wonder, a neuroscience competition on Feb.5 at the Mitchell Park Community Center in Palo Alto. At the interdistrict event, which encompassed a lot of neuroscience clubs from high schools around the Bay Area, neuroscience professionals spoke at Q & A sessions and panel discusssions.
“In the Q & A session we were able to ask a lot of personal questions to the speakers,” Wong said. “Basically, we learned a lot about the neuroscientist perspective and what it means to do research and have a meaningful impact.”
One of Wong’s favorite speakers was a PhD student studying psychology and neurolinguistics at Stanford, who talked about his neuroscience passions and what it means to study neuroscience in the 21st century.
Aside from SFN Wonder, the club has also participated in the Stanford Brain Bee, a contest held by the university that tests competitors on a plethora of neuroscience knowledge. As the club continues after its founding two years ago, it looks to make a mark on the MVHS science community.
