Despite the chilly Thursday afternoon on Jan. 5, the MVHS girls soccer team radiated energy and exuberance on the field in their second league home game against Wilcox HS. With a series of unrelenting ball maneuvers, offensive runs and persistent goal attempts from both sides, the first half ended 1-0 in WHS’ favor, despite goalie junior Natalia Osorio’s valiant saves.
The Matadors opened up the second half with newfound intensity and encouragement from coach Jose Vargas. Halfway through, WHS got past goalie junior Gabby Campbell to score one more goal — but MVHS made sure that was the Chargers’ last. From that point on, junior Nina Biondi scored two goals in a row, bringing the score to 2-2 with less than three minutes left in the game. The game ultimately ended in a tie.
