On March 18th, Homestead HS ran its first ever fashion show with the theme “Wear the World”. Guest performers and models alike showcased the different designs of Cupertino HS and MVHS, like the Black Box Crew. In this Q&A, sophomore and secretary of MV Fashion Club Kavin Sivakumar and junior treasurer Aditi Jain give their opinions on their participation and the outcome of the Homestead fashion show.
El Estoque: What garments did MV Fashion Club showcase?
Kavin Sivakumar: I didn’t want to sew a whole new collection just for this fashion show, so I just re-showcased the garments that I made previously. I have a skirt that I made out of curtain fabric and a kimono from the similar material. The skirt was the first garment I ever made. I also wanted to test out my sewing skills and this was a very easy garment to start.
EE: How did MVHS contribute to the “Wear the World” fashion theme?
KS: I feel like “Wear the World” is more of a community thing, so it just meant incorporate everyone’s fashion into your own. That’s why they invited other high schools to either showcase their designs or watch the fashion show. That was just my interpretation of “Wear the World”.
EE: What were your first impressions on the fashion show?
Aditi Jain: It was interesting to see what other people were doing in other high schools, although it wasn’t extremely impressive. It’s interesting because [MVHS] is the only school that makes their own designs. Other schools take ready-made designs and they showcase them like lookbooks, [staged models]. It’s different, but it’s not what [MVHS] fashion club is focused on. We were able to see the different types of fashion that other high schools are doing in the Bay Area.
EE: What aspects can you incorporate into your upcoming fashion show after seeing HHS’ fashion show?
AJ: I feel like after seeing [the fashion show], we will try to make our fashion show better. It was basically a prototype show, so it was understandable that there were a lot of misconceptions and it was unorganized. Seeing how they did their fashion show, we can learn from that and make our fashion shows more memorable.
KS: I think the performances were done really well and they incorporated ways in which it was not just fashion or performances. It was very refreshing to see and if anyone would be willing to perform in our fashion show, we would definitely encourage it.
What are some aspects that you wished to change from HHS’ fashion show?
KS: We would have asked the models to wear very versatile clothing. By versatile, I mean solid colors like black and white and not something that is specific to only a certain outfit. Also, we would have had more dress rehearsals to get more of a feel for the show. Lastly, we would encourage other clubs to try to make their own designs because I can’t imagine fashion club without making your own clothing.
EE: Would MV Fashion Club invite other designers from high schools to participate in the MV Fashion Show?
AJ: The [MV Fashion Show] is mainly a [MVHS] thing. Definitely people from other high schools can come because it’s not during school hours, but incorporating other people’s designs into the show is not what we focus on. I feel like if we were more involved and it took a longer period to organize the show, then we would definitely [let other high schools] participate.
