With the end of February comes the start of the NY Fashion week. This is a week filled with new and upcoming trends that represent different cultures and ethnicities. Junior officer Aditi Jain shares her thoughts on the common themes seen during the week and their relevance to MVHS’ fashion.
El Estoque: What were some popular trends you observed?
Aditi Jain: It really depended. In regards to fabrics there was a lot of suede and net going on definitely. There were a lot more brighter colors and pastels being used. In regards to actual designs there were a lot of X-factor casual tops, ruffles, and many culturally-inspired designs. I definitely liked the Spanish-inspired designs and Thai-inspired designs.
EE: What were your favorite trends or items during the week?
AJ: Just in general, I really like the idea of culturally-inspired designs so Spanish-inspired designs really hit home for me. In the New York Fashion week the Spanish-inspired designs had a lot of reds and intricate and elaborate gowns. Especially since I decided to do Italian-inspired designs for my line this year. The fashion show at Monta Vista is during the end of may so we need our lines by then. There is an upcoming fashion show in Homestead that we are doing as well that is in March where we will be using our designs from last year.
EE: What is your opinion on Monta Vista’s current fashion sense?
AJ: It really depends from person to person. I feel like Monta Vista is more casual and people don’t take time to dress up in the mornings. But the colors definitely change based on season; for winter of last year, the main color was grey somehow. For spring this year, it is sort of a mahogany color and you definitely start to see a lot more of skirts.
EE: What trends do you want to see incorporated in Monta Vista students?
AJ: It would be nice if the whole basketball shorts and tshirt thing could go out the window, because it’s not working. For men’s fashion, even if you go slightly beyond and wear a shirt with slacks, it’s a simple ensemble but would look so much better. For girls, I feel that there are more options available.
EE: Any tips for students who want to try new trends?
AJ: I recommend going shopping with your friends so it’s not just you. You get a second opinion. Whenever you try a new trend, you should not be afraid to wear it. I know that because it’s a new trend you might be scared to wear it to school and it might remain in your closet but you should be able to wear what you want with confidence. With me, even if I am wearing something simple wearing it with confidence makes it a whole other ensemble. You should not be feeling like you are being judged for what you are wearing.
