Thuds, grunts and crashes erupt almost constantly in the weight room after school, all set to a blaring soundtrack with the likes of Rihanna and Drake and the rhythmic thud of dropping weights. Yet tucked away from all this chaos in the back corner of the room sits the only adult, who seems to remain focused on his copy of the Mercury News amid all this chaos. He doesn’t acknowledge any disruption, only looking up from his paper to chat with some of the regular faces that show up after school to pump some iron. To the observer, it seems as though nothing can shake paraeducator Tim Deegan from his simple routine. To Deegan, the chaos is all part of another day out of the thirteen long years he has been opening up the weight room after school. Although it may seem like just yesterday when he first started working at MVHS seventeen years ago, this school year marks Deegan’s final year, as he prepares for retirement at sixty-five years old. Watch as Deegan reminisces about his experiences as a paraeducator and in the weight room.
