On Feb. 4, a couple of videos popped up on the Facebook feeds of MVHS students. Within a short couple of hours, “Friends Day” videos were ubiquitous– a casual scroll through Facebook had become a chore. Most of us simply accepted the fact that it was an odd holiday of some sort, but there’s more to the story than just a name. So here are your biggest questions, answered.
Q: So what is “Friends Day”?
A: To celebrate its 12th birthday, Facebook has dubbed Feb. 4 “Friends Day” to, as stated by the Facebook Newsroom, “invite the world to celebrate and reflect on the importance of connecting.” To celebrate the milestone, the website introduced shareable “Friends Day” videos that stitch together profile pictures of friends, shared moments and memories with friends.
Q: What’s the difference between “Friends Day” videos and the “Year in Review” video?
A: While the two videos are similar, the “Year in Review” video highlights your year, with your memories, while the “Friends Day” video was for “highlighting inspiring stories about the power of friendship,” according to Facebook.
Q: How can I access the videos?
A: If you have a Facebook account, the short clip was watchable at the top of your home page, and could be edited and shared to your feed. You could also view your personalized clip by clicking “Watch Yours” on a friend’s video.
Q: What else does “Friends Day” entail?
A: In addition to the shareable clips, Facebook also released two free sticker packs, aptly named “Best Friends” and “Friendship.” The packs are accessible in Messenger and at facebook.com/messenger.
