Halftime arrives with mixed emotions. Optimism is at its highest as players rally amongst themselves sitting in a deadlock with CCS powerhouse Santa Teresa High School. At the same time, players walk off the field disappointed knowing that they let their fourteen point lead from the first quarter slip. One kickoff and sixteen seconds after the start of the second half, the Matadors’ downslide begins. Following an errant pass and a plethora of missed tackles during their next possession, the game gets out of hand. Football is certainly a game of inches but in this case it was also a game of minutes. The Matadors, who were all tied up with STHS at halftime, found themselves stuck in a 28-14 hole just two minutes later. A Friday night of parties and celebration was in jeopardy.Fortunes soon got worse, as the team went on to concede three more touchdowns, while failing to score any of their own in the second half. By the end of the third quarter, the stands were emptying and injuries were rampant all over the field. By the nine minute mark in the fourth quarter, backups entered the game on both sides, effectively ending any sign of a comeback. The end of the second half had concluded with the same result as the first half: bitter disappointment for the Matadors.
The Matadors will face Santa Clara HS at home on Oct. 2 at 7 pm.
