Q & A: Students share perspectives on the Apple Watch

Q & A: Students share perspectives on the Apple Watch

Sophomore, Marcus Plutowski photo 2 (4)

EE: Would you buy an Apple watch yourself?

MP: No. It is an overpriced version of what is already existent on the market with limited functionality restricted by a highly oppressive marketing scheme and app distribution regulation system.

EE: Do you think that introducing the watch was a good move on Apple’s part?
MP: Yes, because it is a high priced product with very low production costs. Due to the large favorability of the market user base towards Apple, the sales of the products are likely to continue. Therefore, Apple is likely to make a large profit off of it and it’s going to give them a foothold in a newly developing market.

EE: Was there anything that you found unexpected about the Apple watch?
MP: No, not really. It very much conforms to all of their other products, in terms of the design, user interface, and management of app distribution. It’s very similar to an iPhone; no real surprise there.

EE: Do you think that there are advantages to getting an Android watch instead of the Apple watch?
MP: The point of the watch is to be something that you can actually use in your daily life. Other watches, such as the Pebble which is another watch on the market, allow for much more customization. The Pebble is cheaper and more accessible. Overall, I think that it is much better to get an alternative Android based watch.

EE: Is it worth the money?

NV: The price is high, especially for the different bands like the gold or silver band. If I was going to buy it, I would buy the cheapest kind.

EE: Do you think that introducing the watch was a smart business decision for Apple?
NV: I think that it is a good investment decision because die-hard Apple fans who love the product would definitely go for it and because it is an easy way to get a phone call.

EE: Do you think that the Apple Watch will become more popular than the iPhone?
NV: I don’t think so because of the price [of the watch] and I don’t think that you can necessarily beat the iPhone.

EE: Is there anything that surprised you about the Apple Watch?
NV: I liked the heart rate monitoring feature.

EE: Would you buy the Apple Watch for yourself? Why?
KS: I would buy it for someone, but not for myself. For myself, I don’t think that it would be reasonable because it is the type of watch that would have more of a benefit for a working individual rather than a student.

EE: Do you think that the introducing the watch was a good decision for Apple?
KS: Definitely. Even though everyone thought that it was ridiculous, the 14K watch sold out at some stores. The watch was economically brilliant for them.

EE: Do you think that the watch will ever become more popular than the iPhone?
KS: No, I think that it will be an accessory for the iPhone.

EE: Do you think that the price is reasonable?
KS: For what I get, the cheapest one seems reasonable. However, you only really need basic functions for this kind of watch.

EE: Would you wear the gold Apple Watch?
KS: Maybe, but I think that it might be too pretentious.

EE: Would you buy an Apple Watch?

MS: I don’t have an iPhone, but I would consider buying a smartwatch.

EE: Do you think that it was a good idea for Apple to introduce the watch?
MS: I think that it’s a great idea, but I’m not so fond of their execution. For example, I like how some of the [Android] watches that have 30-day battery lives.

EE: Was there anything that surprised you about the Apple watch?
MS: The function of the zoom button was probably the coolest thing about the whole watch.

EE: Would you wear the gold watch?
MS: No, because I would get judged by everyone for buying a seventeen thousand dollar watch that has only like a thousand dollars worth of gold in it. However, I would probably wear a different model [of the Apple watch].

EE: If you could have anything at Apple, what would you get?
AH: I would get the most expensive computer and then sell it. Then, I would buy an iPhone with that money and save the rest.

EE: Would you buy an Apple Watch?
AH: No. I think that they are not useful, in the way that a phone would be useful. I also don’t think that it’s worth the price because there are cheaper options.

EE: If you received an Apple Watch as a present, would you wear it?
AH: No, I would sell it. The screen is too small for you to accomplish anything with it, yet too big to look attractive.
