The Matadors play the Los Altos eagles at 3:30 on March 3, 2015
The Matadors fell 9-3 in their home opener against Los Altos high school. The Matadors started senior Kevin Nordby at pitcher.
Nordby ended last season with a 1.44 E.R.A, 3 complete games, and going 5-2 in his 7 starts. Against the Eagles Nordby had a rough time finding the strike zone, with an E.R.A of 12.25, seven hits resulting in seven runs, and five walked batters. Since it is the beginning of the season there is little cause for concern.
Within the first inning Monta Vista found themselves down by four runs as a slew of passed balls and walked batters caught up with them. The Matadors managed to string together a series of hits in response to the Eagles, at the end of the first inning the score was 4-3 Eagles.
But as the game progressed the Eagles strung hits together and scored one run in the second inning, two in the third, two in the seventh. The Matadors failed to string their hits together and left their players on base resulting in no runs scored.
In the fifth inning sophomore Jared Slater stepped in to pitch for the Matadors, facing fourteen batters Slater had an E.R.A of 2.33 and three hits resulting in two runs.
Moving forward the Matadors are going to focus on their situational hitting. According to Varsity coach Nick Bonacorsi the focus should remain on offense as you need to score runs to win games.
The Matadors travel down to Santa Teresa high school on March 5, 2015 to play the Saints.
Below are the interviews from senior Sheldon McClelland, Bonacorsi, and Slater.
