MVHS played its second regular season game on Sept. 19 against rival Cupertino High School. Due to the Homecoming checklist, a number of MVHS students came to support the team, as each class receives points for Homecoming if students attend home games. The Lady Matadors delivered, and will continue the regular season with a 2-0 record.
In the first half, MVHS maintained a tight offense and pressed against CHS. However, the Matadors found it hard to finish their shots. With three minutes left in the first half, junior Allegra Ziegler-Hunts scored after a run down the middle by senior Janaye Sakkas.
Thirty seconds into the second half, Sakkas dribbled the ball to the goal from the middle of the field. Although her shot failed to get past the goalie, junior Jaya Kumari followed and scored. 2-0 MVHS. Something in the offense clicked. In the next two minutes, MVHS scored two more goals by Kumari and Agarwala respectively. 4-0 MVHS.
The scoring streak slowed down, but the Matadors continued to maintain possession. Ziegler-Hunts and Kumari scored again in the last ten minutes of the game to put MVHS up 6-0. Despite MVHS’s dominant play, CHS managed to get past the MVHS defense and goalie with twenty seconds left in the game.
“We’ve had breakdowns in the last couple minutes of every game,” junior goalie Amelia deLeon said. “But it ended up ok.”
The game didn’t end with a shutout, but the Lady Matadors showed their superiority as the regular season continues.
