Students react to a California bill that will lift California’s ban on bilingual education.
On Feb. 20, California Senator Ricardo Lara proposed SB 1174, a bill that would lift Proposition 227, which forbids teachers from teaching English in students’ native languages. With the California Senate’s approval a few weeks ago, the bill will be placed on voting ballots next year, and if approved, the bill will allow schools to integrate English Language Development students into English classes. To gauge students’ opinions on the bill, El Estoque asked students and teachers for their opinions on foreign students being immersed in regular English classes.
