As the school year comes to a close, seniors reflect on their four years of high school and pinpoint the songs that have defined their MVHS experience. Their selections range from songs that conjure up personal memories to lyrics that just make them nostalgic.
Senior Tristan Saldivar
Song: “Wop” by J. Dash
“This is definitely one of my favorite songs and it really reminds me of Senior Spoof this year. Senior Spoof was one of my highlights of high school and it brings back memories of my friends and I having fun. And I also remember hanging out with my friends on fourth of July during summer and listening to this song.”
Senior Donovan Phua
Song: “I Love It” by Icona Pop
“This song really defines my high school experience because I did what I had to do but also, at the same time, I did whatever I wanted to do. I cared about high school, but there were times when I just did not care and wanted to make the most out of [life]. [This song] brings back memories from [the link and freshmen dance] this year because everyone was just jumping and singing along to it.”
Senior Jui Sarwate
Song: “Heart Skips a Beat” by Olly Murs
“We listened to [this song] in DECA my junior year and we kind of got sick of it after a while because we played this on a 24-hour loop. [This song] brings back memories of when we were preparing for all of our events and getting ready for competitions.”
Senior Zehan Mistry
Song: “High School Never Ends” by Bowling for Soup
“There is a part where it sings ‘four years you think for sure, that’s all you’ve got to endure.‘ But, it’s funny because I got into a prestigious school with a similar academic level as MVHS so I have to start all over again in college. High school really is never ending for me, I guess.”
Senior Seung Hun Kim
Song: “The Graduation March” by Pomp and Circumstance
“Back in my freshman year, the first time I went to a [high school] graduation, I wasn’t graduating at the time. I remember thinking [that] four years was so far away for me to become a senior. And now here I am, as a senior, about to graduate.”
Senior Michael Chen
Song: “Play Hard” by David Guetta
“[This song] kind of embodies the aspect of the school — how you work hard, but you can also play hard. We also make the most out of our high school experiences because even though we have to work hard at MVHS, we’ve had lots of fun as well. Looking back, a lot of people say that they hate this school, but I feel like it was a great experience here. [And this song] perfectly defines my high school experience.”
Senior Corinna Vong
Song: “What Time is it?” by High School Musical 2
“I heard this song and it reminded me about how whenever school’s almost out, it’s basically summertime. I would always wait until I hear this song, because I would wait for summer vacation all the time.”
Senior Connie Guan
Song: “North By North” by Faded Paper Figures
“While [my friend and I] were doing college applications, [we] were playing songs and my friend said that this song reminded her of me very well. And this song brings back memories from doing college applications and preparing to leave for college.”
Senior Zoe Heringer
Song: “Clocks” by Coldplay
“[This song] is mellow and it helps me study. It kind of brings back memories of high school and the struggle for four years. It’s like, clocks and time passing by. It feels like high school went by really fast by like clocks ticking and tocking.”
