The first of weekly Friday Funday events held at lunch on Aug. 30 to promote school spirit.
Starting this year, Leadership will be holding weekly Friday Fundays. The first Funday of the year was held at lunch in the academic court on Aug. 30. As a prelude to the Welcome Back Dance, or Summer Never Ends Dance, held on the same day from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the main gym, it featured Hawaiian themed-entertainment with a limbo competition, free promotional music by SOS Entertainment, food and drinks. Winners of the limbo contest received candy leis.
“We’re holding this to rev up school spirit and get people excited about being part of [MVHS],” Class of 2016 Social Manager Nathan Mallipeddi said.
The Friday Fundays will have themes based on upcoming and current events. 2014 Social Manager Donovan Phua explained that each Friday Funday is hosted by two groups from Leadership, each led by a single leader, who are responsible for developing an idea together for a creative event and then seeking approval from Leadership, Principal April Scott and Assistant Principal Mike White. Each person in those two groups volunteers to take on a different role during the activity. The rest of the Leadership students support the Funday by promoting it to their peers. The Aug. 30 Funday was held by 2016 class officers and HisTech.
The Funday event, led by Mallipeddi, garnered popular interest. Many participants appreciated the event as an opportunity to unwind and have fun at the end of the week.
“I came out because I love limbo, and I like trying new things,” freshman Bennett Zhang said. “I think [Friday Fundays] will be awesome.”
The Friday Funday on Sep. 6 will be called Football Brunch Run and will be held by 2014 class officers and Club Commission. The varsity football team will run through campus to promote the first home football game this year.
