Earlier this season, the Matadors achieved a key victory by beating the Wildcats 7-1, the first team to do so this season. However, during last Thursday’s game against the Wildcats, the Matadors were unable to score any runs, leading to a defeat of 6-0.
The Wildcats started out strong, gaining a home run in each of the first two innings, and maintained a strong defense against the Matadors. In the top of the third inning, senior Ian Young walked to first, and junior Kendall Yamauchi then hit a single, which gave the Matadors a loaded first and second base. On a missed bunt, Young made a run for third, then attempted to return to second after realizing the run couldn’t be made. Though Young got caught out, Yamauchi managed to steal second after a quick chase.
For the remainder of the third inning and the fourth inning, the Matadors were still unable to defeat the strong defense put up by the Wildcats, who scored another inning in the bottom of the fourth. During the top of the sixth inning, senior Spencer Rodrigues skillfully managed to reach home base, but not in time to score the run.
At the start of the bottom of the sixth inning, both pitcher and catcher positions switched over to seniors Jed Drexler and Brian Kearns respectively, but even this change of players didn’t seem to turn around the course of the game – by the end of the sixth inning, the Wildcats had scored two more home runs. The game concluded with a score of 6-0.
Despite their loss, the Matadors’ stunning victory against Los Gatos High School earlier in the season, as well as other victories throughout the year, proved enough to qualify them for CCS. “We stumbled a couple of times, but regardless, we still came out for every single game and fought to win… the time we beat Los Gatos is a good example of that,” Coach Nick Bonacorsi said.
The Matadors next game is against St. Francis High School at SFHS.
