New award system for Greek Week

New+award+system+for+Greek+Week
With Greek Week adding four spirit daysto the school year, ASB has created a new point system that includes more prizes for all classes at the Battle at Mount Olympus Rally on Jan. 20. The spirit week was created with the intention of fostering more school spirit throughout the year instead of the concentrated competition during Homecoming Week.
Greek Week is separated into different competitions, where classes can earn individual awards for each. This point system differs from the Homecoming system by offering more opportunities for each class to participate and be rewarded for their efforts. Illustration by Lisa Zhang.

The new point system differs from the one used during Homecoming because all points are not totaled into a final score. Instead awards will be given to all different types of competitions, such as separate ones for dress-up days, lunchtime activities and the rally.

“We want everyone to know their efforts are appreciated,” ASB secretary senior Kelly Darmawan said. “For Homecoming, when you have one clear winner, it’s kinda sad if you lose, and [we’re] rejecting three-fourths of our school.”

Lunchtime competitions are not accounted for through this point-based system. For example, the first and second place winners of Wednesday’s Battle of Strength were able to earn awards for their respective classes. However, these points will not be added to the total points earned from the rally to determine a single winner; instead, the class that wins each competition will receive a prize for that competition to be presented during the rally.

To tally dress-up day points on Tuesday and Wednesday, Leadership classes visited one random class from each grade because there were no allotted times for announcements on block days. They visited grade-isolated classes such as the Biology for freshmen, and Government, for seniors, and used that class to determine a percentage for the class dress-up. For the latter two days, Leadership will visit all the classes durin
g fifth period to count students and will place more weight on these numbers than on numbers from the previous two days.“We thought [the turnout for dress-up days] would be better, but it’s okay,” Darmawan said. “Hopefully everyone dresses up for the rally.”The winners for all the competitions will be announced during the rally. There will be four opportunities for a class to win a prize, and one gender will be awarded a prize after the Battle of Love competition on Thursday.
