Junior Ideen Seyed scored 12 of Los Altos’ 13 first quarter points, but Sum matched her with 15 first half points, including two three-point shots. Senior Hitomi Sugimoto also scored six points in the first half to give MVHS a 29-23 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, senior Lauren Amorese surged with 15 points, including a three-point play at the end of the third quarter that led to a 42-42 tie. However, the Matadors did not allow a single field goal to Los Altos in the fourth quarter, as Los Altos shot 0-14 and committed four turnovers. With the defense, MVHS outscore the Eagles 18-6 in the fourth quarter en route to the 60-48 victory.
The Matadors won versus Santa Clara High School in overtime on Jan. 13 — bringing the overall record to 7-9, 4-0. They will continue the league season at home versus Cupertino High School on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.
