Those with a high enough index score will qualify for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination. Starting last year, students who take the AMC 10 must score in the top 2.5% of all scorers or score at least 120 out of the maximum of 150 points to qualify for the AIME. On the other hand, students taking the AMC 12, must score in the top 5% of all scorers or score at least 100 points to qualify for the AIME.
Junior Barak Gila took the AMC 10 last year, qualified for the AIME and later the United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad. This year, he hopes to qualify for the AIME through the AMC 12.
“There isn’t really any secret. The reason I think I do well is because I have the experience,” Gila said, “And a lot of students [here] forget about the probability section, because it’s not really emphasized at MVHS.”
The AMC 10 and 12 registrations are now open to all students. Students are able to sign up with any math teacher or in Room D201 if they do not have a math class. The deadline for registration is Dec. 9. Application fees are $3 and are due with the registration.
