Several weeks back, a theft occurred in which a video camera, the one used from announcements, was stolen from the student center. The culprit has yet to be found.
Theft is a common problem at many schools; pettier thefts however, are the most common.
Many students complain about MVHS’s “hands-off” policy — a policy that states that it is not the responsibility of the office if any theft occurs — when in reality, this is the smartest option for the staff to follow. Students should be wise enough in the first place to keep their things safe, and if they cannot, then they simply should not bring them to school.
Some may be angered by this policy, especially those who have had things stolen from them, but since when was it the office’s responsibility to keep track of every little item that gets stolen? If a system would be in place where every complaint of theft would be compensated for, MVHS would be broke, and our campus security guard would be beat.
Others may complain that our school needs to adopt a theft-secure system where there are video cameras and tight surveillance. The point is that MVHS is considered to be a much trustworthy place in comparison to other schools. According to www.schooldigger.com, a database of school profiles, the rates of crime in American High School, located in Fremont, averages to around 5779 people total per year, whereas MVHS’s crime rate averages to about 899 people total. There is absolutely no need to cut into the already tight budget of the school to save a stick of lip gloss.Lockers are provided for a reason. We are high school students for a reason. This is supposed to be the time where we are growing and maturing, not going backwards in the cycle of life. We should quit complaining and learn to take responsibility.
