Bull Spirit Commission is encouraging students to attend the Sept. 9 home football game against Prospect High School; the game is the first of multiple events that the commission plans to highlight throughout the year in an attempt to increase student turnout.
Bull Spirit Packages, which include a Bull Spirit t-shirt, a foam finger, a meal, and entrance to the game, are on sale for $10 during lunch in the rally court until Friday, Sept. 9. Students can also opt to separately purchase the shirt for $5 and the foam finger for $2. According to junior Bull Spirit Commission lead Lyan Cogan, they aim to sell between 75 and 100 packages, although she emphasized the importance of increased attendance and school spirit over sales.
There’s an additional incentive for students to attend the game: those who come dressed in purple will be entered in a raffle with a chance to win gift cards to Chipotle, Jamba Juice, and Pizza My Heart.
“We’re hoping that people come for the camaraderie, the experience, all of that,” Dean of Students Michael Hicks said. “But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with providing a little external incentive of, ‘Hey, wear some purple, cheer for your team, be there in unity, maybe you’ll win a gift card.’”
According to Hicks, Bull Spirit aims to further foster school spirit in the future by highlighting school events at an average rate of once per week, although he recognizes that the logistics of organizing these events may limit their frequency.
“I really want to expand this to a water polo match, a tennis match,” Hicks said. “Imagine how cool it would be to go out on the pool deck and there’s 100 kids there in their Bull Spirit shirts supporting their water polo team.”
Hicks added that commission plans to extend their focus to non-sports related events as well, such as drama productions, to ensure that all sections of the school feel represented.
Both the Sept. 9 junior varsity and varsity football games will be played at home—Fremont High School—and begin at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
