Boys golf picks up fifth victory at Deep Cliff

Boys golf picks up fifth victory at Deep Cliff

Despite a few mental lapses, the boys golf team earns decent scores to defeat Lynbrook

The MVHS boys golf team had strong individual games as they beat Lynbrook at Deep Cliff Golf Course on April 12 to improve their record to 5-6. Currently, they are fourth in the league behind Saratoga, Los Gatos, and Milpitas.

Though no individual player had a stellar showing, solid rounds from each of the players contributed to the win.

Sophomore Ryan Khodi, playing as the number one seed, shot a 39 on his nine holes. Getting off to a slow start, he bogeyed the first hole. He began regaining his composure on the second hole, scoring par. After hitting the first shot into the tree on the third hole, Khodi bogeyed again. On holes five through seven, Khodi shot par, before bogeying hole eight and finishing his round with a par on hole nine.

Sophomore Michael Abu-Omar, who also shot a 39 on his round, compiled three pars, four bogeys, a double bogey, and a triple bogey on his nine holes.

“Thirty-nine. That’s basically bogey every hole or at bogey golf,” Abu-Omar said. “At Deep Cliff, [my average is] probably around 40, or about the same score, maybe sometimes higher. I did decent today. I’m doing bad compared to last season, I hate to say it.”

With the win, the team hopes to move higher in the standings, which allows them to send more players to the CCS tournament that begins at the end of April. Besides the top two teams in their league that automatically qualify, the seven individuals in the league with the best scores, not part of the automatically qualifying teams, represent their school at the CCS individual tournament.

The golf team concludes their regular season on April 14 with a rematch against Lynbrook High School at Deep Cliff Golf Course.
