Girls soccer at CCS: 6-1 Silver Creek, 0-0 (10-9) Mountain View

Matadors win their first CCS game against Silver Creek 6-1 and lose the second against Mountain View 0-0, 10-9




MVHS, with a 7-7-5 record, played their first CCS game against Silver Creek High School, which went 15-4-1 overall, at Andrew High School on Feb. 23.

Round 1: MVHS 6, Silver Creek 1
In their first CCS game, varsity girls soccer started off strong with a 6-1 win against Silver Creek High School. MVHS easily broke up Silver Creek’s defense with quick, accurate passing and shooting opportunities.

Photo by Lisa Zhang.“We were really pumped today, really focused,” senior Sandra Ley said. “I think the last few games of our league we weren’t doing so well [because] we knew we were in CCS, but now we are all pumped up [because] we know we are in it. We need to do our best.”

The Lady Matadors started the first half strong and made the score 4-0 by half time. Within the first ten minutes, Silver Creek had an own goal to give the Lady Matadors a lead. From there sophomore Hadar Sachs added two goals and sophomore Celeste Kim with another by a heading off a corner kick.

Silver Creek stepped up their defense in the second half, but the Lady Matadors were able to match their intensity by adding two more goals. Silver Creek’s offense was finally able to break through the Matadors defense, scoring one goal, but it was too late for them to catch up to MVHS, 6-1.

Round 2: Mountain View 0, MVHS 0 (10-9 Penalties)
The Matadors played Mountain View High School in their next CCS game at Pioneer High School on Feb. 26. The Matadors held the Spartans at 0-0 after two halves of overtime but lost in penalty kicks 10-9.

The second half of the game consisted of more aggressive play by both teams. The Matadors had good scoring opportunities at 31 minutes and 78 minutes, but were unable to capitalize on both.

The strong play continued into the overtime periods as both teams were able to prevent any goals from the other team. After twelve rounds of penalty kicks, Mountain View was able to finally clinch the win by beating them 10-9 and will continue on to the semi-final round of CCS.
