Varsity wrestlers lose a close second match of the season
After losing the Cupertino Cup, the Matadors were looking to redeem themselves with a home game against visiting Palo Alto High School on Jan 11. With a strong 12-0 start from two consecutive pins by lightweights sophomore Anirudh Rajagophlan and senior Adrian Garcia, it seemed as if the Matadors were going to get the redemption they craved.
However, the Matadors soon lost their lead after Paly junior Joey Christopherson and sophomore Trent Marshal put Paly back on the scoreboard with pins. Paly gained on the Matadors 12-18.
The Vikings used a cobra clutch to control MVHS wrestlers’ heads and maneuver their bodies. The standing clutch left MVHS wrestlers vulnerable to Paly’s single and double leg takes — setting the stage for a pin.
Senior Andrew Pappas, Freshman Farris Karaborni, and sophomore James Whall lost close matches, evening out the lead MVHS held.
Towards the end, senior Adnan Hamwi’s and junior Michael Whittaker’s pins were overshadowed by junior Dimitry Grinenko’s and Pappas’ loss, bringing the score to a close 39-33 loss.
