Soccer injury results in facial reconstruction surgery for senior Jonathan Yee
On Jan.10, senior Jonathan Yee fell to the ground during a soccer match against Homestead High School claiming he lost a contact lens and could not see clearly, moments after a collision with teammate junior Boson Wang and a Mustang forward. Upon closer examination, the team realized he was bleeding heavily and his father rushed him to the emergency room.
After meeting with two doctors it was determined Yee had a depression fracture in his cheek bone, with bone fragments in his nose causing the excessive bleeding. The fracture in his cheek resulted in a drooping eye and double vision, soon fixed with facial surgery.
“It’s bread and butter for facial reconstructive surgery so they know what they are doing,” his girlfriend senior Kristen Tatsuno said. Tatsuno and teammate senior Jeremy Dor had accompanied Yee to the emergency room directly after the game.
Expecting to recover quickly, Yee is receiving support from his family, teachers, and friends. Tatsuno visits Yee everyday after school along with Dor. His teammates have also made him a get-well card and have a surprise birthday present ready for him on Jan. 22. Physiology teacher Jenna Smith even sent him a puzzle to keep him from getting bored after the surgery.
“At first he was really nervous and scared, but now he thinks the scar he is going to get is really cool. He’s all calm about it now.” Tatsuno said.
Yee hopes to return to the field in time to play in his senior game, which will take place on Feb. 16.
“He wants to play as soon as he can, but what he wants and what he should do are different. I don’t know if that will stop him or not,” Dor said.
