Students prepare for the upcoming Nov.16 concert during 5th period
Music blares from F114 every 5th period. As the guitar solo starts, the saxophones come down into a quiet whisper for the guitarist to let out what he feels on stage. The guitar starts off with a quick chord and then winds into a new beat as his music takes center. As the guitarist winds down, the trumpets come back up to take the music to a new beat. This is all in preparation for the Nov. 16 Jazz Concert, first of three concerts Jazz Ensemble puts on for the school.
Jazz Ensemble is one of the music classes offered to players who want to be creative with their music. With the ability to solo and flow music from their emotions, students enjoy jazz because they do not need to conform to the notes they are given. Furthermore, students can play instruments such as base guitar and drums that are considered to be band instruments.
The concert on Nov. 16 is one of the first events this year for the Jazz Ensemble and because of that fact, players feel it is one of their most important concerts.
“This is like our debut concert to publicize who we are and what we do,” junior Timothy Namkung said.
Some of the pieces to be performed include “All Blues, “Let it Flow” and “Little Sunflower” by Freddie Hubbard. The concert will be a combination of funk, blues and swing music.
As each instrument finished their solo, and the saxophones held their last note, the drums faded down and blended in to the quiet silence of the audience gathered from the other music rooms. With the last beat, the bell signaling the end of the period rings just in time, bring the listeners and the players back to reality.
