Boys varsity swimming to swim in the CCS meet on May 21 and 22
Heading into the Central Coast Section (CCS) Swim and Dive Championships, the boys varsity swim team knows that they are going to be the underdogs. Though the team will be sending 13 swimmers to the meet, their realistic goals include a top five or at least a top ten team finish at the CCS meet.
According to coach Ron Freeman, the two most competitive leagues within CCS are the SCVAL De Anza league that MVHS participates in and the West Catholic Athletic League that includes the perennial powerhouses Bellarmine College Preparatory and St. Francis High School.
"We've got depth," Freeman said. "We had guys finish two, three, four like in the 500 free [at league finals] but at CCS these same guys may end up finishing six, seven, eight. The schools that can win CCS usually have guys that finish first in a number of events."
With a freshman, two sophomores, four juniors and six seniors swimming in CCS, the whole team is excited for the preliminary round to be held at the Santa Clara International Swim Center on May 21. They had a team dinner at Florentine's on Thursday to bond before the big meet.
One relay team to take note of is the 400 free relay team. Consisting of junior Alex Bagdasarian and Sean Hughes, freshman Kevin Su and sophomore Michael Leung, the team hoped to break the school record for this particular event. However, due to Leung's recent foot injury that required stitches, breaking the record may be out of reach.
Win or lose, the boys will make the best out of their experience.
"Last year, 20 records were broken [at CCS] and it's a fun experience to see the fastest swimmers in the county," Bagdasarian said.
