Drama travels to Ashland, Oregon for an exciting Shakespeare festival
From April 9-12, 50 Advanced Drama and Advanced Drama Honors students from MVHS, Homestead High School and Fremont High School will attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. There, the students will watch Tennessee Williams’s “Cat On a Hot Tin Roof”, William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”, as well as attend two workshops that have yet to be decided.
“It’s going to be exciting seeing how [a Shakespearean play] comes together as a whole, not like bits and pieces of it,” junior Karina Fathi said.
To gain insight into the plays, the students can attend optional prologue depending on how they plan their days. The low-key schedule allows the students to make decisions that complement their interests.
“[Ashland] is a really artistic town so it’s really fun to be in,” senior Sheiva Khalily said. “[The schedule] is pretty relaxed so we can get up really late and then just explore Ashland.”
Workshops have yet to be decided, but students will have a tour of the theater as well as explore the set design of “Hamlet”.
“[Last year], they described the story, the background and the time period of ‘Macbeth’, which helped a lot because ‘Macbeth’ is a really complicated play,” Khalily said.
Students are looking forward to the trip, which has been highly recommended by past participants.
“I’ve heard from people who’ve went and graduated that [the festival] is like having a rehearsal for three days straight and it’s like a big sleepover,” Fathi said. “It’s supposed to be the [best] trip of the year.”
