The 12th annual Dance Showcase "To Love" on Feb. 5 shows students’ love of dance
It’s been said that it takes an athlete to dance, but an artist to be a dancer. In a tribute to the art of dance, the 12th annual Dance Fusion Showcase "To Love" on Feb. 5 featured the dance classes with guests performances from Cheer, Song, and the Marquesas.
At MVHS, it’s the dance team, Cheer and Song that recognized for their dance acheivements, but the Dance Showcase allows anyone interested in dance to have the chance to perform and flaunt their talent.
But it’s probably nerve-wracking for those who have never performed dance to begin with.
With a gym packed with family and friends, support is reaching out to the students. But still, the fact that video cameras and cameras are pointed at the performers probably doesn’t make it any better. Interestingly, it was hard to see who was more excited — the screaming parents or the dancers.
The showcase started off with a rather impressive performance by a dance class accompanied by the song "She Bangs" with sophomore Justin Hsiung catching the limelight with a short solo. In contrast to the first two rather upbeat routines, the Marquesas, dressed in leather, performed to the more serious "Uprising" by Muse while glaring at the audience in accordance with the theme of "fierce love."
In contrast, guest performer junior Justin Duong and junior Jenny Lee’s duo performed a routine displaying the more romantic side of love combining some elements of Duong’s experience with break-dancing with Lee’s talent of ballroom dancing.
Then, in a Michael Jackson-esque performance, a dance class donned fedora hats while sophomore Gavin Lee, wearing a fedora hat and a silver sequined glove, performed the moonwalk and glided across the stage Billy Jean style.
In the closing ceremony, dance teacher Lori Graham handed out awards and acknowledgements to teacher assistants and students.
"You are my family, and even though I say it every year, I really mean it this year," Graham said.
And so the love goes on.
