Paper applications, the first step to become the Intra-District Council Student Board Member, are due March 5 to the ASB office

If you aspire to be more than just another student leader, now is your chance to rise above school colors. The application period for the Intra-District Council (IDC) Student Board Member for 2010-2011, which has been since Feb. 10, is closing, with paper applications due March 5 to the ASB office.

According to the information sheet, the FUHSD Board of Trustees is looking for a student to "serve as [the] student voice … for the students at Cupertino, Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook, and Monta Vista High Schools… present student activities, achievements…[and] learn about education and policy-making in FUHSD and beyond."

The student board member is expected to serve a one-year term from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011.  They are expected to attend all regular FUHSD Board of Trustees meetings in addition to any special meetings that may be required, and has the ability to vote on issues, barring expulsion and teacher related items.  The responsibilities of the student board member are expected to be an average of six hours a week.  However, it is not a responsibility taken lightly.

"Being a student sometimes it can be difficult to weigh in on [issues such as budgets and state and municipal taxing]," current Student Board Member senior Christopher Chui said.

The student board member role includes administrative responsibilities such as the the representation of all five FUHSD high schools at board meetings and facilitating networking of all student leaders, in addition to more public relation responsibilities such as attendance at most FUHSD functions as well as publicizing the happenings of the FUHSD Board of Trustees.

All applications go through an identical reviewing process.  Initially, each school’s respective ASB cabinet and IDC representatives will review their school’s applications, select finalists who will be interviewed and then select one candidate to submit to IDC.  These candidates will prepare a five-minute presentation of their qualifications for the role for IDC .  Finally, IDC  will interview all candidates before making their final selection.  The selected candidate will serve an internship with Chui, before assuming the position July 1.
