Government Team sells CDs to raise funds for Paralyzed Veterans of America
On Feb. 24, the rally court speakers were replaced by one small speaker that blared something familiar yet totally different. Voices of students and teachers took over those of beloved pop idols. Government Team played remixed covers and original songs from the student-produced CD "Healing".
The CD contains recordings of students such as sophomore Jacob Lui, senior Vincent Nguyen, senior Jeremy Huey, Brown Sound and teachers Jay Shelton and Dale Barcellos and his wife, Marilyn Barcellos. Each CD is sold for $10; half of the proceeds go to Paralyzed Veterans of America, 40 percent towards Government Team’s Washington D.C. trip and 10 percent towards production costs.
"Aside from our main purpose at Washington D.C., we do a bunch of side activities to make [the trip] worthwhile," Government Team and history teacher Chris Chiang said. "This charity part of the trip is one of [these activities]."
From the packagers to the singers, everyone who took part in compiling the CD is a volunteer. Government Team members took the time outside of class to organize and produce the CDs in a week’s time.
Dale agreed to have his wife’s and his original song "Walking Around in My Shoes" included in the CD because it was for a good cause.
"I’m a veteran, so I like it," Barcellos said.
Government Team plans to visit the Arlington National Memorial (for the military) from Feb. 26 to Mar. 3 and physically hand the check at the Paralyzed Veterans of America head quarters.
CDs will also be sold on Feb. 25 during lunch in the Rally Court.
