Obama steped out of the way for “Lost”
It was a battle between “Lost’s” final season premiere and Obama’s State of Union Speech over the same time slot on Feb 2. Both wrap up what has been a long and arduous journey.
And who won? “Lost” did.
This year’s State of Union speech was planned to be aired on Jan. 26, but Obama wanted to push the date back to Feb. 2, which just happened to be “Lost’s” premiere of their sixth and final season. Anxious “Lost” fans posted comments threatening a drop in Obama’s rating or their raging out if his speech clashed with the premiere episode.
Funny how entertainment has greater priority than Obama’s plans for the next year. Yes, there was a cliff-hanger at the end of the last season and the fates of Juliet, Jacob, and the Swan station will finally be revealed, but need the president step out of the way for a television show?
Well, during economic hardships, any form of entertainment provides some sort of escape from reality. An anxious person probably wouldn’t be able to sit through Obama’s speech while they seethe at him because they’re missing out on what happened after Juliet detonated the bomb.
Despite politics’ humdrum and formality, we are the ones that the will bear the burden of the President’s plans. For all of Obama’s plans that are for the greater good, we are the ones who are going to bear the burden of the costs. Entertainment is ephemeral, and after one exciting episode we still must face the upcoming problems.
So shouldn’t we face the problems that Obama will raise in his speech before we try to escape them?
But once again, everything is always going to be the government’s fault; Obama’s original date of Jan. 26 was the day of “American Idol’s” new episode.
