The girls varsity volleyball team defeated Cupertino High School, but was forced to give up their win due to a violation of CCS rules.
When the girls varsity volleyball team beat Cupertino High School with a score 3-1 on Sep. 22, the team was on their way to an undefeated league record. However, the next day, the team was forced to forfeit the win due to a violation of CCS rules.
The violation occurred when senior Audrey Lee injured her knee, resulting in a void in the girl’s line up and creating a need for an extra player. Coach Colin Anderson decided to pull up Jane Doe* from the junior varsity team to fill in for Lee. According to Anderson, all the physical forms and paper work were completed, except he overlooked one minor detail-the transfer forms for moving the athlete up to varsity. Once he realized that the paperwork was missing, he immediately called the CCS administration. Unfortunately, CCS officials told him that violating this rule results in an automatic forfeit of the game.
“I am really sorry I let this happen,” Anderson said. “It was a careless mistake.” Up to this point, Doe* still cannot play with the varsity team because the paper work is still being processed.
"I felt really guilty and bad that I caused this [incident] even though Ando made it very clear that it was his fault." Doe* said.
According to Doe*, she still can’t play because CCS requires a span of 20 days of notice and then it can start working on the forms.
"It’s frustrating having to sit out every game." Doe* said.
The team currently stands with a 4-1 league record and 9-8 record overall.
“People make mistakes. It’s unfortunate because we wanted to go for an undefeated season," senior Nicole Dao said. “But all we can do now is move on and hopefully win the rest of our games.”
