Library institutes new policy for students with unscheduled periods
According to library media teacher Megan Birdsong, the library technician staff collaborated with the administration and Leadership class to figure out a workable policy that fits both classes' and unscheduled students' needs.
“It’s a very difficult issue to try to address the needs of both classes and unscheduled students at the same time," Birdsong said, "because their needs in some ways conflict.” According to Birdsong, they are oftentimes faced with the problem of sharing the same limited library resources and space
Ever since the previous policy that prevented students from using the library during unscheduled periods was instituted, Birdsong said some students have complained and even entered regardless, seeing that the library was uncrowded during unscheduled periods. According to Birdsong, the policy at the time was ineffectual, and there needed to be a more permanent and effective procedure in place. It had, however, enabled the library staff to back up and concentrate on further policy adjustments in order to better suit the needs of both classes and unscheduled students.
As for the new policy, some students regarded it as an inconvenience.
"I think its kind of unnecessary," sophomore Sarika Patel said. "A lot of people have stopped using the library because they don't want the hassle and because they only need it like once or twice randomly."
Regardless, Birdsong said the policy was going well so far. Although it is set for the semester, students are welcome to provide input and suggestions for future possible modifications.
“We can’t make everybody happy at the same time," Birdsong said. "There’s too many people involved, and that’s what the challenge is.”
It's a challenge that Birdsong has faced ever since the beginning of the school year.
