On Sept. 16, the team extended its efforts and decisively defeated the Los Altos varsity team in their first league match with an overall score of 6-1.
After warm-ups, a roll call of players and their opponents, and a rousing chorus of “We feel good, oh we feel so good, oh!” the girls took control.
“We were just dominating the whole time,” singles #1 player sophomore Sylvia Li said.
The last match, between #3 doubles, was narrowly lost after two tiebreakers. Strategy played a crucial role in the team’s victory. Before the match, players were offered the chance to volunteer to play at a lower rank in order to nearly guarantee a victory against their unsuspecting opponents.
“It was better if we could win as many doubles matches as possible,” Li said, since it would place less pressure for winning on the singles players.
Senior Iliana Nguyen, a #1 doubles player, willingly sacrificed her hard-earned position, and played #2 doubles with Nickie Ding. The pair won their match against the Los Altos #2 doubles pair with a score of 6-3, 6-1. In their first league match in the fall, the girls made clear their winning intentions for the rest of the season.
