After meticulous preparation, on Nov. 3, the underclassmen and juniors of the team presented speeches to a crowd that didn’t understand its inside jokes. There’s senior Riku Jandu, who will play even if it costs her a couple of fingers, senior Cynthia Shen, who is 99% nice and 1% sassy and senior Karissa Mi, who always does the Irish heel click. But the crowd, the last league game and the nostalgia seemed to affect the Matadors.

Despite the heated emotions of the game, the Matadors clinched a 3-0 win against Fremont High School. Despite a strong first set, MVHS battled against their own miscommunication errors, in the second and the third, but still hung onto the lead.

MVHS blew out FHS in the first set, as was the initial expectation. In a 25-7 win, the Matadors’senior lineup took advantage of FHS’s poor serving and strategically hit into the chinks of FHS’s formation. Middle sophomore Alia Johnson, the only non-senior to start the game, made critical blocks and hits that led to a Matador-dominated set.

But a few spikes and serves would not suffice in the second set. As FHS fell into the rhythm of the game, MVHS fell prey to miscommunication errors. The set remained within a two-point distance for most of the set, with FHS occasionally taking/in the lead. MVHS continually served and hit the ball out of bounds, a frustration that seemed to debilitate their performance. But senior Cynthia Shen bailed out MVHS with three key hits in the end of the set. In an almost acrobatic motion, Shen tipped the ball with her back facing the nett. Her actions propelled MVHS to a 25-21 set win.

One away from the 3-0 win, MVHS came out with a 25-22 win for the third set but continued to struggle with irregular problems. But once again, FHS’s careless errors kept MVHS in the lead. Even though MVHS had a shaky win, its undefeated league record propelled them to a CCS game on Nov. 11.
