“For CCS, my sophomore year, we had a dance party to our workout playlist, to increase the hype before our CCS Playoff game,” senior Jaya Kumari said, “and we ended up winning that by a lot.”

Every year, the field hockey team compiles a new playlist, and all the players submit songs of their choice to be included in it. The list of songs is then approved by the captains, and compiled into a playlist. There’s a variety of songs, anything ranging from “Let the Groove Get In” by Justin Timberlake, to “Under the Sea,”  from the Disney Classic “The Little Mermaid”, that both motivates and energizes the team.

Junior Danielle Koontz believes that listening to music while working out pumps her up for anything that’s coming up and  always gets her in the mood to play field hockey.

“My favorite workout song is probably ‘Eye of the Tiger’ by Survivor because it has a steady beat, and helps pump me up when I work out,” Koontz said.

But of course, taste in music differs from person to person.

Senior Bronwen Hardee looks for songs that are more upbeat, and have a steadier rhythm. She prefers to listen to the song “Gang of Rhythm” by Walk off the Earth to get motivated to play a game.

But diversity is anything but bad for the field hockey playlist. Hardee believes that this range of songs makes for a well balanced fusion for the team, with a song for everyone.

“The playlist is just a bunch of players collecting a bunch of songs that people want, we have a huge variety- we have some Disney songs, we have Andy Grammer,” Hardee said. “And the whole team contributes to it, and I think it’s got a good mix.”

Despite their different tastes of music, all three field hockey players gave one piece of advice: working out with a playlist is essential.

“Working out with music definitely motivates me more, and it also makes routine workouts more exciting,” Kumari said.
