Cross country: Team shares common practice runs

Cross+country%3A+Team+shares+common+practice+runs

The MVHS cross country team often does not work out at MVHS itself. Instead, the team often ventures into the nearby streets and hills on loop runs. Check four of the team’s frequently-used runs for distance, elevation change and team members’ comments.

1 Horse to Garrod Gates (7.2 miles)

“The hills are much steeper and sometimes it’s straight up,” junior Andy Ma said. “It’s probably harder for the casual runner.”

This challenging run begins with a climb up to Stevens Canyon County Park and then through Fremont Older Open Space Preserve to Garrod Farms. After a hard hill, the trail descends down Regnart Road back to MVHS.[

2 Up and Over Run (6.0 miles)

“On the golf course [on the way back] there’s a water jug for the golfers,” senior Brent Mogensen said. “And it’s always ice cold.”

The Up and Over trail, also known as the Down and Under trail when done in reverse, avoids busy streets and has a more moderate distance. The trail begins at MVHS, ascends to Fremont Older Open Space Preserve, and then descends back to MVHS. “On the golf course [on the way back] there’s a water jug for the golfers,” senior Brent Mogensen said. “And it’s always ice cold.”

3 Candy Crush Run (1.01 miles)

“It’s a good simulation of a race,” senior Namrata Subramanian said. “And then we are well prepared for the race.”

This short run in Fremont Older presents a challenge with hills, with the highest point at 870 feet near Hunter’s Point. The run loops around the Hayfield Trail near Hunter’s Point in Fremont Older Open Space Preserve.

4 Stelling Loop (4.04 miles)

“Half of its downhill and half of its uphill,” senior Brent Mogensen said. “But if you do reverse Stelling it’s easy.”

This flat run loops around streets near MVHS. Slight inclines and descents provide a minor challenge for a runner.
