Flag Football defeated Homestead High School 38-18 on Wednesday, Oct. 8. With a current league record of 8-2, as well as the team coming off of a 67-0 win against Lynbrook High School a few days before, players came into the game with a high morale, looking to chase undefeated Palo Alto High School for the best record in the league. MVHS started off strong, with junior wide receiver and safety Allie Rummelhoff intercepting the ball and scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter, as well as the team scoring an extra point, allowing the team to take control early on in the game.
In the second quarter, HHS bounced back, intercepting the ball twice and scoring two touchdowns, bringing the score to 13-12 MV at halftime. In the third quarter, with defenses strong on both sides, each team only scored one touchdown. Going into the fourth quarter, with a score of 20-18, MVHS ended the game with three consecutive touchdowns, bringing the final score to 38-18. Assistant coach Curtis Sloan believes freshman and quarterback Rishika Kothari in particular has been improving, contributing to the success of the overall team.
“The quarterback had solid reads,” Sloan said. “She did a better job of making a decision and going for it without hesitations, as hesitating usually slows her down, and that’s when she ends up getting sacked.”
Freshman Olivia Franzino, a wide receiver and linebacker who scored her first ever touchdown in the fourth quarter, applauds the team for always supporting each other and communicating.
“I’m really proud of our team,” Franzino said. “I think one thing we did really well was actually being on the sidelines and even on the field, calling out the plays, telling people what we think the other people are going to be doing. You never know what’s going to happen. So I think it’s really helpful when the entire team has your back.”
