Ultimate frisbee is a sport of athleticism, strategy and intricate maneuvers. From the basic cut to the intricate Callahan play, there is a lot of practice and strategy that goes into the sport. Here are four basic maneuvers, demonstrated by MVUF officer sophomore Ryan Loke, that lie at the foundation of ultimate frisbee:

The backhand is the most basic of frisbee throws and is the most commonly used in recreational frisbee passing.1. Place second, third and fourth fingers on frisbee and put thumb on top.
2. Wrap pointer finger around disk.
3. Throw with back of hand facing target and flick wrist.

“A majority of the time because a lot of people don’t know how to throw [the flick],” Loke said. “So if you can’t throw flick, you’re basically blocked [on the backhand].”1. Place second and third fingers on inside of disk. Put thumb, fourth and fifth fingers on outside of disk.
2. Flick disk using the wrist.

“You just want to get the defender off your back,” Loke said.1. Run in one direction.
2. Abruptly switch directions away from the disk handler.

“If you’re really obvious about what side you’re going to go, the defenders going to stay on that side,” Loke said.1. Fake a backhand throw.
2. Move quickly to side away from eyesight of defender.
3. Abruptly switch directions and flick the other way.
