Yearbook tradition takes seniors back to their childhood

Yearbook tradition takes seniors back to their childhood

Around November each year, seniors flood Facebook news feeds with their baby photos. Some have babies making a silly face or wearing funny clothes, while others are more serious pictures. Seniors are also invited to submit their pictures to the yearbook, a tradition which El Valedor has been carrying on for many years.

“It’s interesting because some babies you can tell exactly who they are, they look exactly the same as they do now,” Katie Chen, editor-in-chief of El Valedor, said. “And other babies, you’re like ‘Are you sure that’s you?’”

The tradition has been going on through all of Chen’s time on staff, but this year El Valedor is receiving submissions through Dropbox, as opposed to email which is what they did in previous years. Unfortunately, some submissions don’t have names attached to them, and the yearbook staff is struggling to correctly match the photos with the students, according to senior Bar Yosef.

El Valedor has still received plenty of pictures which will be included in the yearbook. Since El Valedor doesn’t put an age limit for the pictures, Yosef found a large diversity in the pictures and many creative, and some even edited pictures while going through the submissions.

Carrying on this tradition is El Valedor’s way of recognizing the seniors as their high school journey comes to an end.

“When you’re a senior, that’s when your time in high school and at Monta Vista has ended,” Chen said. “And to make things go in a full circle, we give you a chance to show your baby picture where it all started, so it’s a beginning and an end thing.”

Correction (Nov. 17): A previous version of the story that appeared on Nov. 17 misspelled senior Alvin Lui’s name. This error has been corrected.
