International-themed CCC to be held on March 26
Octagon will be hosting the 11th annual Cure Cancer Cafe at the Quinlan Community Center on March 26 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The traditional night of food, entertainment and silent auction is set to the theme “A Window to the World.”As per tradition, the club hopes to raise enough money to donate $10,000 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They have achieved this goal for the past ten years and are working to bring the total to $110,000.Junior Neil Fernandes and sophomore Hadar Sachs will be emceeing the event, with performers ranging from rap-beatbox duo seniors Kevin “Kazaam” Zhang and Samuel Young to Tensync, an a capella group.Tickets are available for $20 in the Rally Court at lunch and at the door. In previous years, the club continued to sell tickets to late-comers at a discounted price with no meal included. But with approximately 375 people at CCC 2010, the number of guests surpassed the venue’s maximum capacity. As a result, this year, the doors will remain open from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. but tickets will not be sold at the door after hitting the cap of approximately 300 attendees.According to Octagon president senior Timur Mertol, this year’s event also faces a decreased number of teachers offering extra credit as an incentive. Unlike past years, the club has also avoided in-class promotion of the event. Despite circumstances, he encourages all students to attend.“I liked my sophomore year CCC [2009] the best because it wasn’t crowded at all,” Mertol said. “Everyone had a seat, everyone got food. They liked the acts and everything went well… Hopefully we’ll get that this year as well.”
