FBLA and DECA strive to make the Laser Quest event annual

These days, club fundraisers like eating at Pizza my Heart or “Servants for a Day” go on for a couple of days, and never return until the following year. However, FBLA and DECA are paving a road to become an annual event with laser tag. “We wanted something that was social event [for members]. It’s Thanksgiving break, and we had two months of stress and everything,” DECA president senior Japheth Wong said. “[The event] is a play on the competition between the two clubs.” The friendly competition, held on Nov. 24 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., ran as the platform for the clubs’ promotion. The results: 1. Free for All2. Monta Vista FBLA vs. Lynbrook High School FBLA and Monta Vista DECA. Winner: Lynbrook High School FBLA and Monta Vista DECA (Score- 4496 points) Runner-up: Monta Vista FBLA (score 3040 points)3. Members vs. Officers Winner: Officers (Score- 6504 points) Runner-up: Members (Score- 5034 points)“It’s a fun thing to do,” FBLA member sophomore Thea Miller said. “It is also fun to meet other FBLA and DECA members from other high schools.” In hopes of making the event larger, they are currently expanding to other schools in order to increase networking. This year, Lynbrook High School FBLA was invited to come participate in the fundraiser, and MV FBLA and MV DECA are hoping to expand to Lynbrook’s DECA. The expansion was not the only the change from last year’s event. “Last year, there were a lot more DECA members from Monta Vista that came, but this year, there wasn’t as many,” MV FBLA president senior Angela Gu explained, stating the extra Lynbrook FBLA players were the reason. “Last year, the tension between DECA and FBLA was a lot greater… [but it was] playful tension.”With rapid changes occurring before the event, Gu and Wong hope to see the event be carried on for future years after they graduate.
