Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday—the dreaded mid-week slump. That time where the weekend seems so close yet so far, when all you can do is wait for Friday. Get up and get out, time to listen to the harmonious melodies of MVHS.
From May 18-May 20, the Music Department will feature a trio of concerts to finish off the year. On May 18, the four Jazz Combos of the Jazz Band present their selections, followed by the upbeat Choir Pops concert on May 19. Rounding out the concerts on May 20 will be the Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. For the past three to four weeks, all four Jazz Combos have been perfecting several pieces, ranging from traditional jazz to contemporary jazz. Each combo will be playing about three pieces on May 18 in the Auditorium.
The Choir Spring Concert features songs from the hit series "Glee" and other popular songs on May 19 in the Main gym. All four choirs: A Choir, B Choir, Concert Choir and Variations, will sing and dance for the majority of the concert, interspersed with some soloists, duets and acoustic guitar players.
"We have fun, pretty ballads, rock, some pop and some 50's music," choir teacher Shari D'Epiro said. "We also have a little bit of Broadway, so its a big combination."
Out of the 52 students that auditioned for solos, 12 students were picked. Freshman Puja Iyer will be singing "Gravity" by Sara Bareilles.
"[Auditioning] was very nerve-wracking—there was a lot of practice and waiting," Iyer said. "The reason I picked the song was because I thought it would be easier to have a piano part if I sang this song." Choir isn't the only place where students shine. On May 20, the Concert Bands will be savoring their share of the limelight. This year's repertoire features a Wind Ensemble piece composed by senior Jeremy Huey called "Escapade." "It was an opportunity to write a piece that would affect people that I knew," Huey said. "I guess it was an opportunity to write something for the school." Whether you choose to attend one of the concerts or all three, one thing is certain. This week, you can forget the slump.
